It's been such a long time since I've done an outfit post on here! So I thought as it's the start of the year that I'd strip it back to basics.

I believe that basic items should form a large part of your wardrobe. They're simple, versatile and can be built up and paired with your statement pieces (these are your standout items).

You don't want too many statement pieces and no basics as you will really struggle to put together outfits unless you wanna look super extra all the time (which is definitely a look, so you do you!) But I personally think it's all about finding balance.

So for the base of this outfit I've taken a pair of black mom jeans, a black roll neck and a grey denim shirt (because who needs any other colours, right?!)

Before I started to add the layers and accessories I tucked in the roll neck and did a little half tuck on the unbuttoned shirt. Doing this can make an outfit more dynamic and overall a bit more interesting, even before adding accessories. Just have a play around and see what's best for you. I then added a belt to cinch in all the layers.

I could have left the outfit like this but we all know I can't resist a good accessory! (well several really...) I probably own more accessories than clothes but they can really transform an outfit.
As I left the shirt unbuttoned I had quite a bit of space to play with so I stacked three of my favourite necklaces, bare in mind that when your stacking necklaces they need to be really different in length or you'll end up in a tangled mess!

As for my beanie I felt it was far too plain for this outfit so I took a large safety pin and attached it to the side, tying it all in with the other silver accents in the look. This is such a simple way to make a basic item stand out, I'll be doing a little video on this and some easy DIYs later on this year, so keep your eyes peeled.

I finished off this outfit with my trusty New Rocks, my steel tooth pocket chain, a mini backpack and this amazing reversible coat I got for christmas. This coat is such a good investment piece I just love that it's reversible. You CAN be practical and fashionable at the same time!

One side (my favourite) is a really soft faux fur, I love fur coats but they are so impractical when it rains and it rains a lot in the UK! But fear not if it starts to rain the reverse side is waterproof, how good is that? The best bit though is that both sides have decent sized pockets, there's nothing I hate more on a bag or a piece of clothing than a fake pocket, why do they even exist!?

I know I sound like a broken record but it really is amazing how easy it is to transform basic items through the use of accessories, layering and styling. I really enjoy putting outfits together and trying different things. It really is all about trial and error though, there have been so many times that I've had an idea in my head of how I want to style something but when I try it out it doesn't always translate. So I'll just keep on having a play around until I'm happy with how it looks or save the idea for another day.

Just remember there is no wrong or right way on how to style something, it really is subjective. So as long as YOU feel confident and happy in what your wearing, then why give a shit about what anyone else thinks?!

Experiment and be open to trying new things, after all is only clothes and it's not the end of the world if you get it 'wrong'.

I hope you enjoyed this post and it inspires you to try something new,
