Denim is a staple in most peoples wardrobe whether its a pair of jeans, a skirt, a jacket or a shirt. It's a classic fabric that never goes out of trend. Denim is hardwearing, comfy, and extremely versatile, it's no wonder that its become a favourite in our everyday wear.

In this weeks look I'm going to show you how I wear double denim. YES, double denim! Often considered a fashion faux pas, but when done well double denim can look amazing and trust me once you've mastered it you'll never look back!

MIXING + MATCHING

When it comes to double denim it's all about having a play and experimenting with different tones and washes. Because you never really know what's going to work unless you try it first.

I've found that many articles that I've read advise you to not wear matching tones as it can be too much, but I completely disagree with this. Wearing two pieces of the same colour can make a really bold and eye-catching look so don't rule it out! It's definitely one of the easiest ways to do double denim as you don't have to worry if the different pieces work together or not. But if you do want to mix up your tones and washes I find that a good rule of thumb for mixing your denim is to wear lighter colours on top and darker on the bottom as this will avoid you looking too top heavy.

FINDING THE RIGHT FIT

I belive that the most important thing when it comes to denim, particularly jeans, is the fit. Whether they are skinny's, mom jeans or a straight leg you need to find a pair that fit your body well. There's nothing more uncomfortable or unflattering than a pair of jeans that don't fit properly.

I personally love my high waisted jeans I find that they flatter many body shapes as they emphasis the waist, giving the illusion of an hour glass figure. I like to try all the different cuts and shapes as unlike the fabric different styles do go in and out of fashion. For example right now straight leg and mom jeans are really in and the skinny, while still fashionable, isn't as popular as it once was. Always try new styles as you never know you might be missing out on a style that will perfectly compliment your body shape.

PROPORTIONS

When opting for double denim, particularly if your wearing the same wash, you need to pay attention to your proportions. Now I don't mean the proportions of your body, it's more about the different shapes and cuts of your garments. You can create so many different silhouettes simply by playing around with different fits and proportions.

For example I've gone for a slimmer leg but an oversized, longer fit on the jacket. This gives a nice contrast and by having an oversized boxy fit on top emphasis how slim my legs are. It also gives the illusion of a narrower bottom half particularly around my hips and bum.

There are so many ways you can play around with proportions but essentially you want to mix up your cuts and shapes. While an entirely skin tight outfit can look very streamlined on the right body it's always better to have contrasting garments it just makes an outfit a lot more interesting. It's all about getting the balance right.

BREAK IT UP

Another thing to think about when rocking the double denim look is the non denim items and accessories you may also be wearing. These items are a great way to break up the denim making the overall outfit a lot more interesting and dynamic. I personally like my all black looks so I've kept with the same colour as the denim but you could easily wear different colours that compliment whatever wash of denim you choose to wear. As I'm sticking with the same colour I decided to bring some different textures and fabrics to add some contrast to the look. I did this with a mesh bodysuit and a cropped, sleeveless roll neck on top.

Other ways to break up the denim is through accessories. I went for silver items as they work really well against the black. These small flourishes, such as the leg harness and necklaces really pull the whole look together, they draw your eyes in and break up the double denim nicely.

So those are my top tips for creating a double denim look, I really hope you found this interesting and useful. Now go and raid your wardrobe for all of your denim and try something new!
