A broad spectrum of things influence my style from characters in films and TV series to musicians and artists. I pull so many references from popular culture within my looks and style that I have decided to dedicate a section of my blog to my style inspiration. I will try and post once a month about someone or something that has shaped my sense of style, breaking down their looks and outfits to see what makes them so memorable.

Over the last few years we have been experiencing a big 90s revival and it doesn't seem to be going away anytime soon! For me this is definitely a most welcomed comeback as I grew up in the 90s and was at an age where I loved everything the Spice Girls or Sabrina The Teenage Witch wore but wasn't quite old enough to have my own sense of style.

'NA, NA, NA, NA'

My style inspiration this month is Clarissa Darling

Clarissa Explains It All debut on Nickelodeon 25 Years ago. This teen sitcom broke so many boundaries for kids TV, it addressed teenage issues in such a contemporary manor. One example is how Clarissa repeatedly acknowledged the audience, breaking the fourth wall and making us feel like we were part of her world. Also it was Nickelodeons first series ever to feature a female lead!!

Clarissa, played by Melissa Joan Hart, was a sassy, cool and confident character who wasn't afraid to be herself. This is what caught my attention all those years ago when I first discovered the series. I think she is a brilliant and realistic role model, unlike some of the characters seen in todays kids TV.

Here are my top five style lessons that I picked up from Clarissa Explains It All:

1. FIRST RULE OF FASHION IS THERE ARE NO RULES!

Clarissa was a fashion rebel. She had no rules and went around wearing crazy oversized dad shirts with quirky leggings and Doc Martins. Her style was fun and unique, it was okay to wear clashing colours and prints, in fact the more the better! However, despite how much goes on in a Clarissa outfit it still looked effortless, she wore the clothes, they didn't wear her. Confidence is key.

2. THE IMPORTANCE OF ACCESSORIES

We all love a good accessory, there is so much choice and Clarissa definitely knew how to wear one!
Clarissa always seemed to adorn herself with a great collection of headbands, scrunchies and costume jewellery, it was enough to make any 90s girl envious!

3. IT"S ALL ABOUT THE LAYERS

There is no such thing as wearing too many layers! it enables you to unleash your creativity and create a entire new look from the clothes you wear day in and day out. You can keep layering subtle and simple or like Clarissa go all out with clashing colours, prints and textures.

4. DON'T BOX YOURSELF IN

I LOVE that Clarissa wasn't portrayed as a stereotypical girl through her clothing, hobbies or attitude, it was refreshing to see this. She was her own person and not defined by stereotypical gender ideologies.
Basically, she didn't fit into a box and it was okay!

5. HAVE FUN AND EXPERIMENT

Most of all Clarissa Explains It All taught me that fashion was fun and to not be afraid to try something new or unexpected!

So if you haven't seen or heard of Clarissa Explains It All I suggest you go and watch it!
